Since late 2025, U.S. prescription packages carry a small square “2D” barcode — different from the familiar striped one. It holds the drug's exact NDC, its lot number, and its expiration date.
Most people have never noticed it. VerifyDrugLabel scans it to verify the medicine and fill in the expiry for you automatically — so your expiration and recall alerts just work, with no typing.
How to spot it
Look on the manufacturer's box or bottle, near the printed barcode. It's a small square of dots — not the QR code (which has three big squares in the corners). Most over-the-counter boxes only have the striped barcode; we read that too.
